Room 2 is taking part in this year's Get NZ Writing project through SchoolKit.
Last week our SchoolKit box arrived and we were intrigued by what was inside and what we were going to do.

Our first challenge was to create a collaborative colour poem. We voted to decide upon our colour (BLUE) and then each needed to write a sentence using the colour blue. We then worked in groups to put our sentences together so they sounded good and as a class to put our group sentences together to make a class poem. It was great to see those people who are focusing on getting better at speaking infront of people taking the opportunity to read their group's sentences to the rest of the class. We did some shuffling and swapping to make the poem sound even better and here is what we came up with.
We enjoyed doing this so much we decided to create a rainbow poem, working in small groups to create a mini poem each for our colour. After working through the same process of writing, swapping, changing and adding, we then used Google Draw to publish each of sentences to create a book.
Next we started working on our poster to send to our buddy school. We had a lengthy debate about the place of interest in our region that we wanted to put onto our poster. During our discussion we realised that Ashburton is a pretty awesome place to live as we have lots of great places we can visit and have fun in.
After giving persuasive arguments as to why each group thought their place was the best we voted and finally decided that Mt Hutt should be our place of interest.

We worked in pairs or small groups to complete the different sections of 'big yellow poster'.
Now it's time to explore the items in the tin!
We need to create a wordbank of forty words for each item in the tin.
Use this checklist to help you - think about your senses, adjectives and similes which you could use. Research some facts about your object and find some translations related to your object. Get a real mixture of words - it will really help you with the next part of our project!
Finding forty words sounded hard at first but we were surprised when we got going that it wasn't so hard!

Now that you have your wordbank, choose 20 of your best, most 'sticky' words - words that sound great, have good rhythm or create a picture in your mind.
Use Note.ly to put each word on a post-it and move them around until it sounds amazing when you read it out loud. (Your sign in is your email address and your usual password).
The final challenge . . . take your 20 words and 'cut the fat' again to get down to 18 words! Now use the anagram maker to find an anagram for your object. Once you've checked your practice postcard it's time for the real thing! Collect one from Mrs Corcoran, fill in your words and colour the reverse side.

We hope our buddy class at Katikati Primary enjoy exploring our poems! We can't wait to see what we get from whom in the next few days!
Great excitement when our little yellow Courier Post parcel arrived! The children really enjoyed sharing the postcards with each other and especially enjoyed seeing what anagrams Katikati Primary had come up with for their particular objects.
Putting the postcards together to see the final poster (Room 2 hadn't seen theirs before it got sent away so didn't know what it was supposed to look like) was a great co-operative activity and so was putting it together again to display in the classroom window. Great teamwork Room 2!
