Samoan Language Week is 27 May to 2 June. To celebrate we are making a collaborative presentation to share information we have learnt about Samoa.
Collaborative Presentation
We worked with a buddy to create a question for investigation about Samoa. After developing our question we worked to investigate this and work on a collaborative presentation to share what we found out. We hope that you learn something new about Samoa!
Create a Siapo Cloth
Siapo or tapa cloth is traditionally made from tree bark and contains geometric patterns to represent parts of nature like trees, leaves, flowers, fish, turtles and plants. Siapo was used for clothing and still is for special occasions like weddings but is now more for art and decorations like blankets and wall hangings.
Your challenge is to create your own siapo/tapa. Here's how children at Maungakaramea School created theirs.
1. Do some investigating about different types of designs that you could use on your tapa.
2. Create a draft in your Art scrapbook.
3. Get a piece of brown paper and divide it into the number of sections you want to have.
4. Scrunch up your brown paper to create a bark effect.
5. Draw on your tapa design (maybe pencil first so you can make changes and then go over it with black marker - remember to put newspaper down!)
